Organic Nest offers chemical-free baby clothing
The Organic Nest advertises itself as a shop that sells bedding, organic clothing and toys and other items, but a shopper also might think of it as a place to find lots of things to make both babies and adults feel cozy.
A major focus for the Bernarsville shop is to provide a chemical-free sleep environment, said owner Deborah Foster.
"A non-toxic sleeping environment is even more important for babies and children whose immune systems are still developing, and who spend more time sleeping than adults,'' said the shop's Web site.
That goal extends to clothing, toys, layettes and other baby materials, as well as clothing, skin care products and other merchandise for adults, Foster said.
The owner said she has tracked down many organic vendors who are committed to paying a living wage to their employees, whether domestically or in an international marketplace. She relies on those vendors for such specialties as handbags made out of recycled materials.
Other items are showcased on her Web site.
Along with sheets, pillows, mattresses and other bedding, Foster said she sells cribs and beds for both children and adults constructed from natural Pacific maple wood.
Foster said she really believes in the integrity of the merchandise she sells and strives to live an organic lifestyle herself.
"I walk the walk,'' she said.
Foster showed off the organic wares in her shop to a pregnant customer. Expectant parents can register at the Organic Nest for baby shower gifts. Brides-to-be also can register, she said.
Despite the prevalence of baby items on display in the store, Foster said about half of what she sells is for adults, whether bedding, gifts or clothing, such as robes and shirts made with organic cotton.

Hi, Janet. What kind of help are you looking for in getting baby things together? I might be able to provide some links to local organizations.
